Nature provides some of the best decorations, and pinecones are no exception. By giving them a minimalist makeover, we can transform these natural finds into elegant, textural ornaments. Here’s how to create your own monochrome pinecone ornaments.
I love decorating for Christmas. Below are some of my favorite products for decorating.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Pinecones
- White spray paint
- Newspaper or drop cloth
- Thin ribbon or string for hanging
- Optional: Gold or silver paint for accents
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Prepare your pinecones: Clean your pinecones by gently brushing off any dirt or debris. If they’re closed, you can open them by placing them in a warm oven (200°F) for about an hour.
- Set up your painting area: Lay out newspaper or a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors.
- Paint the pinecones: Apply a light coat of white spray paint to the pinecones. Allow to dry, then apply a second coat for fuller coverage.
- Optional – Create a dipped effect: For some pinecones, you can leave the tips unpainted for a dipped look. Simply paint from the bottom up, stopping about halfway.
- Let them dry: Allow the pinecones to dry completely, which usually takes a few hours.
- Optional – Add accents: If desired, use a small brush to add touches of gold or silver paint to the edges of the pinecone scales.
- Attach hanging ribbon: Tie a thin ribbon or string around the stem of the pinecone for hanging.
Tips:
- Collect pinecones of various sizes for a diverse collection of ornaments.
- Try using different shades of white or cream for subtle variety.
- Group several painted pinecones in a bowl for an elegant table centerpiece.
