How to Make Scandinavian Wooden Star Ornaments
Scandinavian design is known for its simplicity, functionality, and beauty – principles that align perfectly with minimalist aesthetics. A Scandinavian wooden star captures that essence, bringing a touch of Nordic charm to your Christmas tree.
I love decorating for Christmas. Below are some of my favorite products for decorating.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Thin wooden dowels (about 1/8 inch in diameter)
- Wood glue
- Saw or wire cutters
- Sandpaper
- White or gold acrylic paint (optional)
- Thin ribbon or string for hanging
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Prepare the dowels: Cut your wooden dowels into pieces of varying lengths. For a 5-pointed star, you’ll need 10 pieces:
- 5 longer ones (about 4 inches)
- 5 shorter ones (about 3 inches)
- Sand the edges: Gently sand the cut ends of each dowel piece to ensure they’re smooth and splinter-free.
- Create the star shape: Arrange the dowel pieces into a star shape. The longer pieces will form the main points of the star, while the shorter pieces will connect them.
- Glue the intersections: Apply a small dab of wood glue at each intersection where the dowels meet. Hold each joint in place for a few seconds to allow the glue to set.
- Let it dry: Allow your star to dry completely. This usually takes about an hour, but check your wood glue’s instructions for specific drying times.
- Optional – Paint: If desired, paint your star white or add touches of gold for a subtle sparkle. For a true minimalist look, leave the wood in its natural state.
- Add hanging string: Once the glue (and paint, if applicable) is completely dry, tie a piece of thin ribbon or string to one point of the star for hanging.
Tips:
- For a more rustic look, use twigs instead of dowels.
- Create stars of different sizes for variety on your tree.
- Group several stars together for a striking effect.
